Build Sustainably
Our building practices include choosing pipeline cities that reinforce our ideas, rehabilitating old buildings and materials where possible, monitoring site energy and infrastructure, perform energy and water resource mapping and analysis, plan for energy future-proofing and demand response, evaluating utility reliability strategies and engaging ownership groups with like-minded sustainability principles as strategic development partners.
Nourish
Our food and beverage initiatives include energy-efficient certified kitchen equipment, natural fuel cooking, onsite composting, locally sourced core menu items, zero waste cocktails, dinners and events, elimination of all items from unethical production and farming practices and elimination of all single-use plastic.

Impact Giving & Pay It Forward
We believe in driving social and environmental benefits directly through our business, and by financially supporting organizations that focus on these issues. In 2018 we donated over $221,000, and in 2019 nearly $140,000 to various charitable partners, including Housing Works, Oceanic Global, The Nature Conservancy, and the NRDC.

Moving forward, we are looking for new opportunities to build sustainability leadership across our management teams. In 2021 we plan to roll out a sustainability-focused incentive plan for our General Managers at every property to increase accountability and solution sharing across all our leaders.

At the same time, hotel teams are encouraged to bring forward ideas and initiatives that help them operationally realize our core values, as exemplified by a site-driven effort to eliminate single-use plastics. We believe embedding sustainability into our culture and our brand identities is a powerful way to hold ourselves accountable at this early stage. As we grow, our company organization will mature into more formalized structures that will reinforce accountability to our ESG metrics and goals.
Our Growing Pipeline
The long-term resiliency of our hotels and our brands anchors our strategy for growth and financial impact. Our global development pipeline is expanding through ground-up builds and acquisitions, and we use the strength of our brands to drive value creation. A key marker of our financial success over time will be the aggregated value of our operated hotels. With 13 pipeline deals underway, SH Hotels & Resorts is developing in 7 countries and 4 continents.
